Question: I have a spinal condition called scoliosis. I like to practice yoga because the movements are so slow and relaxing. But sometimes it hurts while I’m doing a posture. Should I discontinue or stick with it?
Answer: You should definitely continue your yoga practice, even though you have scoliosis (a curvature of the spine). Balancing muscle strengths is one of the benefits of yoga, and it will help you concentrate on correct posture and alignment.
If certain movements are painful, I suggest you consult your instructor. Make sure you are talking to a qualified individual. Maybe you can learn some specific information from your instuctor or physician about what moves work for your body.
In the meantime, be sensitive to your body and don’t do any movement that makes you feel like you’re forcing it. However, there’s a certain amount of work that pushes you safely into a new level of flexibility and strength: Don’t avoid going there.
