Yoga For Physical, Psychological, And Spiritual Needs

April 9, 2008

Yoga is a classical science and philosophy that was developed some 2,000 years ago by the Indian sage Patanjali. Its purpose is to unite the mind, body and spirit. Corresponding to these are three needs that should be satisfied for a contented life:

  1. The physical need is health.
  2. The psychological need is knowledge.
  3. The spiritual need is inner peace.

When all three are present there is harmony. Yoga helps in all three areas. At the physical level it gives relief from countless ailments, some of which reflect our stress filled modern life. The practice of postures strengthens the body and creates a feeling of well being. Psychologically Yoga sharpens the intellect and aids concentration. The practice of breathing techniques calms the mind. Through Yoga meditation inner peace is experienced.

Asanas - The Exercises In Which Hatha Yoga Is Performed

The Yogis believe that there are many hundreds of Asanas that reflect all of the natural movements of the living creatures of the world. However, there are only three basic directions of movement in any pose: forward bend, rotation or twist and back bend. It is as important to focus on getting into and out of an Asana as holding the pose itself. Each Asana pose should reflect your mind and body working together to the best of your individual ability.

Breathing - Pranayama

We can survive for many days without food and a few days without water but without breath we can exist for only a few minutes. In Yoga we use abdominal or diaphragmatic breathing. This consists of pushing the abdomen outward during inhalation as the lungs expand downward and the diaphragm internally descends. During exhalation the abdominal muscles contract and pull in slightly and the diaphragm ascends forcing air out of the lungs.

Mediatation - Pratyahara

Yoga Mediatation is the drawing in of the senses from the external world into the interior self. With practice you will develope deeper self awareness. This practice will return you to the path of your true self.

Yoga Is Here For You

Focus only on what you are doing and how you are feeling. Whatever position you reach be sure that it feels right for your mind, body, and spirit. Treat yourself kindly and enjoy the journey.
