The Basic Principles Of Yoga

1. Exercise (Asanas)

Our body is meant to move and exercise. If our lifestyle does not provide natural movement of muscles and joints, then disease and discomfort will develop over time. Proper exercise should be enjoyable while exercising the body, mind and soul.

2. Breathing (Pranayama)

Yoga teaches you how to use your lungs to maximum capacity and how to control the breath. Proper breathing should be deep, slow and rhythmical. This increases vitality and mental clarity.

3. Relaxation (Savasana)

Yoga techniques are known for their effect of deep relaxation. This can rejuvenate the nervous system and bring a sense of inner peace.

4. Diet

Contrary to popular belief you do not have to be a vegetarian to do yoga. Because much of yogic teaching and practice comes from India, where many of the people are vegetarians, many teachers tend to be vegetarian. Some groups or schools may advocate a vegetarian diet, but it is something that must come gradually with practice and be a free choice. Many yoga people these days are “flexi-tarians.” They will avoid eating meat where it is comfortable and socially acceptable to do so.

The food we eat affects our mind as well as our body (think about what happens if you drink too much coffee). The yogic diet aims for natural, seasonal, locally grown organic food, and if that is not possible, then aim for as little processing as possible.

5. Positive Thinking and Meditation

We become what we think. Therefore we should work toward positive and creative thinking. Learning and practicing the teachings of yoga can develop a positive outlook on life. The mind can be brought under control by regular practice of meditation.
