Finding a good teacher can be like finding a good hairdresser or doctor. You need to ask around about teachers and try some different people. Ask if your teacher continues his or her own practice, how long they have been practicing and where they did their training.
Most of the larger yoga schools offer some type of teacher training course. These courses can run anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, and even years. Most teachers should have 200 to 500 hours of training.
Some of the better known schools are run by Integral Yoga, Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health and the Sivananda Yoga Centers. Understand that in choosing a teacher you should listen to your instincts.
Know that the teacher-student relationship is very important in yoga. Over time most people develop a special relationship with their teacher; one where you feel trust and respect for your teacher and believe in their sincere commitment to yoga and teaching. Trust in the phrase: “When the student is ready the teacher will appear.”
