The best way to learn yoga is to study with a teacher you respect and with whom you feel comfortable. After “shopping around” for a teacher, stick with one until you feel at home with what you are learning.
Jumping from teacher to teacher can lead to confusion. Ask your teacher to help you create a home practice which fits your life and therefore will not become another “have to do” in your day. Try to attend class once a week. When you are established in your own practice, supplement and enliven it by the judicious use of books and videos.
Yoga is one of the orthodox philosophies of India. While it is not a religion, it is theistic, i.e., it teaches the existence of a Supreme Intelligence or Being.
Bhakti yoga is devotional yoga focused on devotion to the guru or a chosen deity, and often includes chanting. Karma yoga is the yoga of service, in which the practitioner dedicates all actions toward spiritual evolution and/or the guru.
However, to practice the techniques of yoga successfully you do not need to believe in such a being. Because yoga is a spiritual rather than a religious practice, it does not interfere with any religion. In fact, many people find that it enhances their own personal religious beliefs.
